Rob Thames (United
States Coast Guard Licensed Captain)
Growing up in Huntsville, Alabama my father took me fishing at an early age. He taught me the basics
of bream and crappie fishing and we went every chance we got.
In the early 1970s my father subscribed to B.A.S.S.
and the monthly issues of BASSMASTER Magazine captured my attention. In 1974 bass fishing became my passion. A good friend
of the family, Mr. Bill Taylor, introduced my father and I to a local bass club, The Lake Murray Bassmasters. We
petitioned for membership, and we were accepted. This is where my tournament experience began.
Lake Murray Bassmasters
had some great guys as members. We had monthly meetings at Angler's South in Ballentine. Man, if those walls could talk. There
were more fish tales told in that building than anyone could imagine.
About a year later several of the more serious
fishermen decided to branch off and form a bass club more focused on tournament fishing. My father, myself, Mark Counts,
Bill Taylor, Joel Page, Ed Page, Larry Moss, Luther Kibler, Mike Summers and a couple of more great guys formed Mid Carolina
Bassmasters. We were a club focused on tournament fishing. We enjoyed the competition and we enjoyed each other. We had
some great times. I will never forget those guys.
