LAKE MURRAY
The Saluda Dam for Lake
Murray was completed in 1930. Full pool is 360 feet above Mean Sea Level. The lake is some 41 miles long, 14 miles wide, and
covers 78 square miles or approximately 50,000 acres. The lake has in the neighborhood of 525 miles of shoreline.
Lake Murray provides consistent opportunity for nice catches of largemouth bass from the pre-spawn through the post-spawn
period. One of my favorite techniques on Lake Murray is sight fishing. The clarity of the water makes sight fishing fun
and exciting even for the novice sight fisherman.
Lake Murray is generally a clear water highland reservoir. There is limited aquatic vegetation
in the lake now. However, Primrose, a shallow water shoreline grass, can be found in some areas of the lake. Other forms
of shallow water bass holding cover are docks, brush piles, flooded scrub brush that grew while the lake was in draw-down,
stumps, and rock. Lake Murray also has plenty of good deep water structure and cover opportunities in the form of humps,
ledges, rock piles, bush, stumps, and channels.
There is plenty of good fishing up the lake as well. The shallow
water and deep water fisherman alike will find good opportunities in and around the Big and Little Saluda Rivers.
