LAKE MURRAY

The Saluda Dam for Lake Murray was completed in 1930. Full pool is 360 feet above Mean Sea Level. The lake is some 41 miles long, 14 miles wide, and covers 78 square miles or approximately 50,000 acres. The lake has in the neighborhood of 525 miles of shoreline.

Lake Murray provides consistent opportunity for nice catches of largemouth bass from the pre-spawn through the post-spawn period. One of my favorite techniques on Lake Murray is sight fishing. The clarity of the water makes sight fishing fun and exciting even for the novice sight fisherman.

Lake Murray is generally a clear water highland reservoir. There is limited aquatic vegetation in the lake now. However, Primrose, a shallow water shoreline grass, can be found in some areas of the lake. Other forms of shallow water bass holding cover are docks, brush piles, flooded scrub brush that grew while the lake was in draw-down, stumps, and rock. Lake Murray also has plenty of good deep water structure and cover opportunities in the form of humps, ledges, rock piles, bush, stumps, and channels.

There is plenty of good fishing up the lake as well. The shallow water and deep water fisherman alike will find good opportunities in and around the Big and Little Saluda Rivers.

RECENT TRIPS

March 2008: Jon Hamby, a fellow Alabamian, fished today and this was his first time on Lake Murray. We had quite a day. The sun was shining, the temps were pleasant, and the fishing wasn't bad either. Jon is pictured with four of the nice bass we caught and released. The bass are really moving toward the bank. We caught and saw fish all day in the shallow water.

March 2008: My great friend Mike Ward is pictured with a sweet Lake Murray largemouth that tipped the scales at just over 5-pounds. Spring is Mike's favorite time of year to bag the fat gals in Lake Murray and it looks like '08 is off to a great start.

April 2008: Lake Murray is on FIRE right now. Today I went out and decided to work a topwater bait and nothing else. Well, the bass seemed to agree with my choice of presentations. Those bass busted my topwater all day. I did not catch any giants but most all of my fish were between 3 and 4-1/2 pounds, and I caught a bunch of bass today.

May 2007: Francine and Jennifer were scheduled to fish on this day; however, an emergency arose and they were forced to reschedule. Well, I went out by myself and caught this nice sack of bass weighing 18 lbs. 13 oz. with the biggest fish going at 6 lbs. 12 oz. Senko baits and topwater all day long. The bait that fooled the big bass was a Shellcracker swimbait made by Black Dog Baits. These guys are new in the manufacturing business but they have a wonderful product. Go to my links page and check out Black Dog Baits.

April 2007: Keith McFall brought a buddie along to lay the smack down on some Lake Murray largemouth. Senkos, Spooks, and RC Tackle Swim Jigs accounted for about 15 bass with the best five weighing in at just over 14 lbs.

March 2007: My friend Luke from Illinios brought his father along to take a break from ice fishing up north and enjoy some southern style bass fishing. We caught in the neighborhood of 15 bass. Luke sacked a couple in the 4 lb. range on Lethal Weapon Swim Jigs. This was a fun day of catchin'.
